For the last six years Game Of Thrones has been a phenomenon. The fantasy drama, created by HBO, has won several awards and remains one of the best shows on television today. The first season ended with a finale that didn’t quite work for the audience, but thankfully it did get fans excited for the second season.
Game Of Thrones returns with its third season on HBO this Sunday, April 4th. This time around the war in the Seven Kingdoms has escalated into full blown civil war with the help of the Iron Throne. Cersei, worried about her son’s safety, sets up a peace conference with her new adviser, Kevan, hoping to bring both sides to an accord. Meanwhile, Jon Snow, still recovering from his injuries from the first season, makes a return to the battle lines, joined by the wildling army of wildling leader Tormund.
The new additions to the cast are both intriguing and exciting. First is the appearance of Oberyn Martell, the Prince of Pentos who has been brought back from the dead. He is now the head of House Martell of the Iron Throne. The addition of Damon stride down from the pen as Balder, a royal guard lord. Finally we have Jon’s younger brother, Ramsay, who was barely present in the first season. He has been brought back as a direwolf and has become a key player in his brother’s war against the powerful House Of Stoneheart.
All these characters and more are introduced and brought to life on screen in the first half of theseason. You can sense the complex story developing behind each as the episodes progress. Most recently, in the penultimate episode, Cersei made a final, shocking decision that changed everything for everyone. While it was expected, the effect was shocking and it left fans wondering what comes next.
This kind of TV show is best enjoyed if you have already developed an image of your favorite characters. In this case, Cersei is definitely a favourite. In the beginning, her ruthless, power-hungry personality dominated the show. Then, after being practically taken away from the city she loved, she regains her powers and falls in love with a prince. Slowly but surely, she realizes that she has to hold onto some of those power and influence or be removed from the wheel when the new season starts.
This storyline is definitely full of drama. It involves two countries (at first, not Britain and House of Targaryen) battling for supremacy and control. Both sides have amassed several dragons. The Greyjoys and the Tyrells are at constant odds over this, as well as the Freys and the Boltons who are backing the Iron Throne.
When the war finally ends, there is a final showdown and it will not be pretty for either the houses. There are hints that Cersei has more than enough dragons, so perhaps she can convince the Tyrells to surrender now that they know she has the chance of gaining control. However, it is Jon’s character,Brien, who kills the last of the wildling soldiers. Cersei realizes she will have to deal with the aftermath of her husband’s death, while Jon proves he possesses the skills needed to become the next King of the Seven Kingdoms.
It is my opinion that the dragons in the Game of Thrones are too large and out of scale for what is realistically possible. It would be like George R.R. Martin creating Dorne with dragons. If it were done correctly, they could attack without warning and cause many casualties, especially for the defenders. I feel Game of Thrones should concentrate on the intrigues and back stories of each of the characters, instead of using dragons as the main plot point.
